Help! What's A Micro Wedding + Should We Have One?

What’s A Micro Wedding?

A micro wedding is typically a wedding with less than 20 guests. The micro wedding is the sweet spot between an elopement and an intimate wedding. They differ from an elopement which is usually done in secret between the couple, officiant and any other supplier hired to mark the occasion. Intimate weddings usually fall around the 50 guest mark.

Why Am I Hearing So Much Chat About Micro Weddings These Days?

In a word…Covid. In an attempt to keep us safe and reduce transmission, numbers are limited for social gatherings. Weddings fall into that category.

Are Micro Weddings New?

Absolutely not. They’ve been around for ages. Here’s a couple to have a gander at to get more of a feel for what a micro wedding is like: Killiehuntly Farmhouse Micro Wedding and Autumnal Micro Wedding.

What Are the Main Advantages to Micro Weddings?

Being smaller in size, micro weddings tend to be far more relaxed than a traditional wedding day. Another inescapable benefit is the impact on your spend. Less people means you’re spending less money. Not only does that give you more flexibility with how you direct your wedding budget, it also means you could hold a party (or two) when restrictions relax.

What Are the Main Disadvantages to Micro Weddings?

The number is capped so you’re unable to invite those relatives you can’t stand and work colleagues you wished worked in another work place…oh wait…

Is a Micro Wedding Right For Us?

Ha! Who knows? The reality is that we’re living through a global pandemic. No-one knows when it will end. No-one. For the foreseeable, micro weddings are the ‘safest’ and most sensible option. Sensible because they can be altered with less faff than a large wedding with all the bells and whistles.

I Need Help to Get My Head Around This Concept?

There’s a number of experienced planners who can help. I’d recommend Fin Flükra or Scarlett + Bell. Both have a wealth of experience in micro weddings and will inject a whole new level of possibility and enthusiasm into your wedding plans. For those of you who’d hoped to have a large wedding and who are now considering a micro wedding, you’d definitely find chatting to them useful.

Where Can We Hold Our Micro Wedding?

Another really cool aspect of micro weddings is that they can be held anywhere: pop a papakata in your back garden, a beach, forrest, even that hillside you’ve admired for years is an option not to forget your favourite restaurant. There’s a great deal more flexibility with where a micro wedding can be held compared to a wedding with lots of guests.

How Much Can I Expect To Pay For Photography + Film?

I can only speak for myself here. Harper Scott offers hourly pricing plus the option of a highlight film add on. A full day rate simply doesn’t suit a micro weddings as they tend to run between 4-8 hours compared to the 10-12 hours of a full on traditional wedding day. With the hourly rate, I leave it to my couples to choose what’s best for them.

Photography: £245 per hour

2-3 minute highlight film: £625

Check out Angie + Paraas’ micro wedding. They were due to hold a large wedding in March 2020. They did an impressive Ross Geller pivot and opted for a beach ceremony with close friends.
