Your Wedding Cake: Advice and Recommendations >> Advice by an Alternative Wedding Photographer

Venue: Glencoe Elopement | Cake: Emmazing Creations

While many folks cast outdated practices aside, the tradition of the wedding cake remains strong. Cutting and eating cake - perhaps the biggest you'll ever buy - is one of the first joint activities you'll do as a newly married couple. What a gloriously indulgent act. It's no surprise that it's withstood the test of time.

THE RIGHT CAKE

There's never been a more exciting time to plan a wedding: with so many creative independent suppliers, your day will be as individual as you. The cake is no exemption. Whether you're looking for a vegan, diary free or gluten free option, you'll find a supplier who'll meet your brief.

Why stop at a single cake? The Ultimate Wedding Cake Table by Big Bear Bakery blows the unimaginative + lazy out of the park:

DRESSING YOUR CAKE

The only rule is there is no rule. Some couples go crazy. Others keep it minimal to bare.

LET YOUR CAKE SHINE

You've spent a lot of time finding the right baker.

Taken time to settle on a design.

Attended the all-important tasting session.

Why...oh why...allow your beautiful cake to be displayed in a dull corner of the room? You may find your cake has been placed in a dull corner, next to a fire exit / fire hydrant / ungainly radiator / ugly painting or some other gaudy 'decorative' or safety feature. Rescue your cake. Agree on a flattering spot in advance. The most impactful spots are simple. It's best to keep distracting elements to a minimum.

Let your cake shine.

HOW TO CUT YOUR CAKE

The time has come. It's your first time cutting a cake so tall, so dense, so delicious. It's best to ask the baker for advice specific to your cake. Nevertheless, for the cleanest cut, aim the knife at the base (the bottom layer) of the cake. Slice down slowly and firmly. One of you can pick up the server with your left hand while the other takes a plate. Working together, use the server to guide the slice of cake onto the plate. If that doesn't work, start again until it does. Your wedding; your cake. Most of all...have fun.
