Richard asked me to pull together a range of recent photographs of our family for a project he was working on. This should've been an easy request to action for an alternative family + wedding photographer. It wasn't. I was taken aback. It's not an exaggeration to say that there's been minimal documentation of our family since the arrival of Fergus. An 18 month gap between the boys is the main reason for the dearth. I need both hands to be free to manage the boys. It's come at a compromise.
Thankfully, I'm friends with a number of wonderful photographers. US-based lifestyle documentarian, Molly Flanagan, spent time with us and produced this honest portrayal back in April 215. I cherish it. We were living in Kenya at the time, unsure of what our next move would be - the physical home was a notional concept for us.
Fast forward to March, 2017...Lindsey from Mack Photo arrives at our home. Our physical home. Our first physical home in 6 years and 7 moves. She spent the afternoon with us. We chatted. Laughed. We were honest about who we were. Why? Because authenticity matters. That's why I shoot family lifestyle sessions + weddings in the way that I do. The images she produced are wonderful, reinforcing what matters. They also served to reassure me that what I do is valid and worthwhile.
If you're contemplating a family session, don't hesitate. Get it booked. It's not something you'll regret. These days may feel long and hard at times but the years are short. Too short. Family lifestyle sessions are at the heart of Harper Scott Photo. Check out my family portfolio and Instagram for a clearer idea of how I approach these sessions.
If you're looking for a photographer who can capture the essence of your family then Harper Scott Photography would be delighted to have that conversation with you. It can be challenging to find a photographer who can capture your family in a creative creative yet honest way. I'd draw your attention to my fellow family lifestyle photographers who have a similar ethos and approach to family sessions:
